Brooklyn offices are scheduled to move November 16

Brooklyn offices are scheduled to move November 16

Brooklyn says its First Selectman, Town Administrator, and First Selectman’s Administrative Assistant offices are scheduled to move to the Clifford B. Green Building on November 16. The same October 22 Town notice says new Town Administrator Elaine Sistare is expected next month. It describes minor Community Center renovations for Parks & Recreation space and Senior Center renovation planning moving toward bidding, but it does not publish a construction start, cost, award, or completion date. Residents should keep using current Town locations until the move takes effect.

Hampton flags South Bigelow Road paving for early November

Hampton’s current Town notice says South Bigelow Road paving is scheduled to resume in the first week of November. The Town advises travelers to use alternate routes while work is underway. October 5 Board of Selectmen minutes also record that additional funding for South Bigelow Road paving was approved at referendum. No day-by-day schedule, detour route, or completion date was published in the current notice.

Canterbury seeks bids for a Woodchuck Hill Road bridge replacement

Canterbury has issued a bid solicitation to replace Bridge No. 04600 on Woodchuck Hill Road over Little River. The legal notice sets a November 19, 11:00 AM deadline for sealed bids and says bids will be publicly opened at Town Hall at that time. It identifies the state/federal project numbers and bidder-qualification requirements. The notice does not yet name an awardee, construction start, road closure, cost, or traffic plan.

Plainfield records two ordinance actions adopted October 14

Plainfield’s October 15 notice says its October 14 Special Town Meeting adopted two ordinance actions. The Town says Ordinance No. 120, concerning obstruction of sidewalks and highway right-of-way, was repealed, and Ordinance No. 134, concerning building permits, was modified. This is an adopted action, not a proposal. The notice says copies are available for public inspection at the Town Clerk’s Office; it does not reproduce the full text.

Thompson sewer-bill recipients have a November 2 deadline

Thompson says the first Water Pollution Control Authority operation-and-maintenance installment is timely if paid in person or postmarked by Monday, November 2. The notice applies to properties that receive a sewer bill or are on the Town sewer line. It says interest begins November 3 at 3%, then 1.5% monthly until paid. The notice does not give account-specific balances, so residents should use their own bill or the Tax Collector for details.

Business Beat

Reported planned Staples closure in Killingly

The Stamford Advocate reported October 22 that window signs at the Staples in Killingly Commons said the store is scheduled to close December 11. The report says Staples officials did not respond to the reporter’s requests for comment that week. This is a reported future closure based on observed signs, not confirmation that the store has already closed. [35]

Woodstock: storage addition and a conditional land-use record

Woodstock’s Economic Development Commission minutes say Linemaster had started a storage addition. Separate Planning and Zoning minutes record unanimous, conditional approval of Scranton Village LLC’s change-of-use application at 292 Route 169; those minutes were posted as unapproved. Neither record establishes a public opening, tenant, completion date, or new operation. [36] [37]

No other business opening, closure, relocation, expansion, ownership change, or operating-property change met the fresh-source standard for this issue.

Civic Briefing

The Pomfret decision below is from the prior week. Hampton and Thompson items are explicitly older published records, not decisions made last week.

Pomfret approved a Community Center HVAC recommendations study

Pomfret’s October 20 Board of Selectmen special-meeting minutes record unanimous approval of a $1,464 Windham County Sheet Metal proposal to develop heating/cooling improvement recommendations for the Community Center. The minutes say SustainableCT grant funding covers the study. This is a planning/recommendations step, not approval of construction or a completed upgrade. [38]

Hampton minutes record referendum results

Hampton’s October 5 Board of Selectmen minutes state that all referendum questions were approved, including the Hampton Elementary School budget, additional South Bigelow Road paving funds, and additional DPW employee funding. The opened minutes do not provide vote totals, individual appropriation amounts, or timelines. [39]

Thompson transfer-station fee vote is recorded, but details remain incomplete

Thompson’s October 6 Board of Selectmen minutes record a 2–1 motion to accept transfer-station fee increases. The posted minutes do not give the fee amounts, effective date, or implementation instructions, and they are marked unapproved. Readers should wait for a published fee schedule or approved minutes before relying on a dollar amount. [44]

Plainfield’s ordinance actions were adopted

Seasonal recipe

Annika’s Warm Apple Crisp

A seasonal apple dessert, adapted from Kids With Food Allergies / AAFA. Recipe created by Mark Hugon.

  • 4–5 apples, cored and sliced
  • 1/3 cup sugar for the apples
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon margarine, melted, for the apples
  • 3/4 cup sugar for the topping
  • 1/2 cup oat flour
  • 1/3 cup margarine for the topping

Heat the oven to 375°F. In a 2½-quart casserole, combine the apples with 1/3 cup sugar, cinnamon and melted margarine. Separately mix 3/4 cup sugar and oat flour, work in 1/3 cup margarine to form crumbs, and spread over the apples. Bake for 45 minutes. The source advises against substituting shortening.

Allergens: Margarine may contain milk or soy; check all ingredient labels. Use certified gluten-free oat flour if needed to avoid gluten cross-contact. Do not assume any product or substitution is allergen-free.
