Markets are in their best weeks

Markets and local food

Eight markets are on our list — five in the Quiet Corner (Danielson, Putnam, Brooklyn, Plainfield, Ashford) and three just outside (Lisbon, Scotland, Willimantic) — most winding down between late October and early November. In season now: apples, winter squash, late tomatoes, cider, and the first storage onions and potatoes.

Volunteer or community

Putnam's Wall That Heals week showed what volunteer muscle can do; remaining funds are going to area veterans. Libraries, land trusts and market managers across the region take weekend help — most ask for an hour or two.
