Hampton: a plain guide to the town

Hampton was incorporated in 1786 out of pieces of Pomfret, Brooklyn, Canterbury, Mansfield and Windham. It is small, rural and run largely by volunteers, and it holds most of James L. Goodwin State Forest. Town hall is open two days a week, so check before driving in.
Town offices
The selectman, town clerk and building department keep the same two days. Taxes are not collected in Hampton — Canterbury handles them.

- Tax payments go to the Town of Canterbury: 1 Municipal Drive, Canterbury. 860-546-9377. They cannot be paid at Hampton town hall.
Library
Fletcher Memorial Library is on Main Street.

Schools
Hampton Elementary takes pre-K to grade 6. Older students go to Parish Hill in Chaplin, the regional school Hampton shares with Chaplin and Scotland.

Outdoors
James L. Goodwin State Forest runs to roughly 2,000 acres across Hampton and Chaplin, with miles of trail, Pine Acres Pond, native plant gardens and a conservation centre. Trails are open dawn to dusk. The centre of the village, around Main Street and Old Route 6, is a National Register historic district.

Rubbish and recycling
Hampton shares its transfer station with Scotland. A sticker is needed, $25, from the town clerk or the station itself.

The library's phone number isn't printed on its own site, so we've left it out rather than copy one from a listings site. Hampton Seniors and the community centre are listed by the town without separate hours, and there's no recreation department page. If something here is wrong, tell us and we'll fix it the same week.
